Minutes-Board Meeting
Saturday, November 11, 2006
Penn State Alumni Association Greater Jacksonville Chapter
Present: Josiah Pritchard, President, Amy Latner Secretary, Mike Anderson, Treasurer, Rich Holtz, Athletic Chair, Judi Crabb, Social Chair, Bob Streightiff, Ex-Member Advisor, Bill Dusack, Immediate Past President
Absent: Danielle Howard, Vice President
The meeting was called to order at 2:36 pm by Josiah Pritchard, President.
The minutes of the July 18th meeting were reviewed and approved 7-0.
Review: The Banquet was a huge success. 49 people attended. A raffle was held and prizes were awarded. The Blue/White Game was shown during dinner on the big screen. It seems to have been a better time of year to hold the annual banquet. It had a higher attendance and dues were collected at the door from many to keep our treasury up to date. Sending out the Newsletter prior to the banquet may have helped to boost attendance, as well as the central location and moderate pricing.
New Business: Rich suggested that we send out another newsletter in January. He also suggested holding a Spring Banquet and attempting to get a speaker to come. Judi suggested the TPC Clubhouse for the next banquet location. Josiah pointed out, and Amy, Bob and Mike agreed that it would be better to meet again and decide things after the holiday season as everyone is so busy this time of year. We will, however, add classifieds to new newsletter as previously stated. We will decide costs at the next meeting and send email to remind people who want to place ads.
Dining with the Lions: Rich suggested Cobblestones at the Creek on Racetrack Road for the fist dinner of the season. It is owned by a Penn State Alumnus. Everyone agreed that would be nice. We could schedule it for January 27, 2007 to celebrate Danielle and Bob’s birthdays. More information to follow from Amy via Broadcast email. Josiah suggested the Athen’s Café for another location as it had such a high turnout last time. Judi requested that we query people at the football games to see where they would like to eat. Amy will do this today, keeping in mind that restaurants need to be able to accommodate large numbers of people and easily give them separate checks. Judi also suggested planning the February dinner around Jodi and Gary’s visit to Jacksonville as Jodi was a past board member. All agreed.
New Officer: Bob has requested to no longer be the treasurer, but active on the board as a member advisor. He nominated Mike Anderson to be the new treasurer. This was approved by all board members in attendance.
Bowl Game: Amy and Josiah have already purchased 2 memberships to the Outback Bowl which includes 48 tickets. There has been quite an interest in attending. Some questions that arose were, Should we buy more tickets? How do we queue those who have already requested tickets? It was decided to wait one more week to buy tickets in case PSU does not get invited to the Outback Bowl. If that is the case, the plan is to sell the existing tickets on ebay. A Bowl Game Committee was set up including Amy, Rich, and Mike. They will make future decisions and let the board know any upcoming plans. It has been decided that there will not be a bus due to lack of interest and difficulty arranging a bus for an 11am game in Tampa. Bud Schaeffer will be there with his RV for a location to tailgate. He will arrive as early as possible that morning as there is no overnight parking.
Alumni Walk: Bob has suggested that we purchase a brick on the new Alumni Walkway between Hintz Alumni Center and University house with the surplus of funds in the treasury. It would be a nice was to honor the Jacksonville Chapter. Bob will research cost and report back to board.
President’s Report: no report
Vice President’s Report: no report
Secretary’s Report: Amy will keep everyone up to date and keep in connection with the members for the upcoming Bowl game and dinners with frequent broadcast emails.
Treasurer’s Report: Josiah made a motion to recognize Bob for his contribution to the club and his continued support of Mike as the new treasurer. Bob will be the new ex member advisor. Bill Dusack will stay on and an additional advisor until June 30th. As of Oct 31st, the balance of the treasury is $5005.47. All bills have been paid. The number of up to date paid members is at 116.
Athletic Chair Report: Basketball season started last night. We won our first game. Most of our winter sports teams will not be traveling close by to arrange any kind of group trip. It appears that the closest game might be Basketball in North Carolina. Concerning Student Admissions, there will be 2 college fairs at Duval, Clay and St. John’s county high schools. Rich passes PSU fact sheets, answers questions and signs up potent ional students for more information. About 3 out of 10 students each year stop by for more information. From the Jacksonville area, there are about 8-10 students attending Penn State at any given time. Rich requested more help manning the booths at the college fairs as there is too much for him to handle on his own.
Social Chair: Judi requested that we pass around a paper for those who attend the games to write any suggestions for dinner.
Immediate Past President: Bill reported that he likes the addition of pictures and the football letter attachment to emails.
A motion was made to accept all reports- Josiah motioned first and Rich Seconded. The motion passed. We will continue to recruit for new positions.
We will not have another meeting before 2007. The Bowl Committee will meet and Amy will report all information to the board. No further business was discussed.
The next meetings time and location is to be determined.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:28 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Amy Latner, Secretary
