Alumni News
Dear Fellow PSU Alumnus:
We now have available the LIONRoar electronic newsletter.
During football season we publish at least 3x per week, 2x a week for recruiting
and winter sports, and 1 every two weeks in the spring and summer. We recap that
week’s game, preview the upcoming game, give you player interviews, and give
you, hopefully an objective outlook on the entire season, plus all the other key
PSU sports too.
The Newsletter is absolutely FREE to every Nittany Lion fan!!!
For a free sample or to subscribe just have your folks click on
www.happyvalley.com, and click
through on LionRoar.
The newsletter is published by Chris Binner, a former sports editor with the
Daily Collegian, and staff writer of the PSU Sports Information Department, and
Walt Smith, a former special team walk-on to the football team. It is a labor of
devotion. We enjoy doing it, and it’s very cathartic for all of us. I am always
amazed at the amount of people who call us, see us at Nittany Lion Functions and
state—oh yeah, I read that. Nevertheless, Walt and I feel compelled to get into
the hands of all Nittany Lion fans. First, it’s free; in some cases, you receive
information that newspapers don’t even receive; and most of all, it’s factual!
Subscribe by either sending email address to
wks17@mindspring.com OR Click on
www.HappyValley.com.
For the Glory,
Walt Smith and Chris Binner

1. THON BREAKS RECORD, RAISES $4.1 MILLION FOR FOUR DIAMONDS
Thon, Penn State's IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, reached an all-time high this year, raising $4.1 million -- more than half a million more than last year -- for The Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The grand total for this year was $4,122,483.65. Roughly 700 dancers filled Rec Hall and danced from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Sunday in the largest student-run philanthropic event in the nation. The mission of The Four Diamonds Fund is to conquer childhood cancer by assisting children treated at Penn State Children's Hospital and their families through superior care, comprehensive support and innovative research. More than 90 percent of Thon's proceeds go straight to patients and each year, and 90 new families receive help from The Four Diamonds Fund.

2. PENN STATE 'SURVIVOR' UPDATE: ALUMNUS SURVIVES FIRST EPISODE
Penn State alumnus Ian Rosenberger was the first of 20 Survivors to make it to shore on the tropical island of Palau, earning him one of two coveted immunity necklaces to start the 10th season of "Survivor" on CBS. Rosenberger then had the first pick of his fellow castaways as the group was split into two nine-member teams, eliminating two people at the start of the game. Rosenberger's group also won team immunity, guaranteeing his survival to the next episode, set to air at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, on CBS. Roseberger, 23, a native of Ambridge, majored in agricultural extension and educational leadership. He also served as the University's homecoming king, participated in Penn State Thespians and the Essence of Joy choir, THON and served as a teacher's assistant. He currently works as a dolphin trainer and dolphin-assisted therapist for children with disabilities in Key Largo, Fla. To vote for Rosenberger as the favorite "Survivor," go to

3. THIS MONTH IN PENN STATE HISTORY: THE FOUNDING OF A WORLD-CLASS UNIVERSITY
It began in 1855; just 80 years after the United States became an independent nation. On Feb. 22 of that year, Pennsylvania Governor William Pollock signed a bill chartering The Farmers' High School as a baccalaureate institution, creating what is today The Pennsylvania State University. Governor Pollock's action not only laid the foundation for public higher education in Pennsylvania, but also created an institution of higher learning that was one of the first of its kind in the nation-an institution dedicated to teaching the scientific principles of farming and educating the working class.

4. WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CAPTURES SECOND BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Tanisha Wright (West Mifflin, Pa.) and Jennifer Harris (Harrisburg,
Pa.) each scored 20 points and the No. 24 Penn State women's basketball team pulled away from Northwestern for an 83-56 win in front of 15,177 on Sunday (Feb. 20). The game was the Lady Lions' home season finale, and the win gave Penn State its second perfect home season in two years, as it finished the year 12-0 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Before the game the Lady Lions honored the five seniors who finished their four-year careers with 50 wins at home. The Lady Lions now head on the road to play No. 2/3 Ohio State on Feb. 27 with at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title on the line.
